Virginia’s A Smith Bowman Distillery has announced the Abraham Bowman Oak Series, a series of experimental limited-edition American whiskeys. The new releases will join the Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Collection.
The Abraham Bowman Oak Series will use a variety of oaks in its exploration of cask maturation, beginning with French oak for the series’ inaugural release. The Abraham Bowman Series: French Oak has been aged for 12 years in French oak barrels, some with and some without charring.
Head distiller David Bock commented: “These barrels sat for an extended period of time to maximize the differences among them. Once blended together, the vanilla from the no-char barrels helps balance out the pepper notes from the charred barrels, creating a dynamic and delicious blend. We are very pleased with the final result.”
The distillery says the French oak expression has flavours of cherry, caramel, and cinnamon apple, among others.
Bock continued: “French oak is teaching us that experimenting with wood can bring some exciting nuances to the flavor profile of a distillate. As the upcoming Oak Series releases continue to age, we are excited to explore what will come next in the Abraham Bowman collection.”
The series is named for distillery founder Abram Smith Bowman’s great-grandfather, a colonel of the American Revolutionary War. The Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Collection was first launched in 2010, and has explored a variety of techniques, mash bills, and finish es in the time since.
The launch follows other distilleries’ recent limited-edition experiments with cask types, including Maker’s Mark and Pursuit Spirits.
Abraham Bowman Oak Series: French Oak will be made available through online lottery between April 4 and April 11 2024, via the A Smith Bowman website. Lottery winners must visit the A Smith Bowman gift shop in person to purchase their bottle.
