The new release has been made under the guidance of Diageo’s master of malt, Dr Craig Wilson. The 30-year-old whiskey has been given a three-cask finish ; aged in Bordeaux, Calvados, and Guatemalan rum casks and refined in custom quarter casks.
Wilson commented: “There is an art and science to the creation of whisky, born of an unabating quest to wield flavor — a journey that is complex, evolving into unknown directions, only to finally reveal itself as the patient labor of a visionary at work.”
Mortlach was founded in 1823 in Scotland’s Speyside whiskey region. Sometimes called ‘The Beast of Dufftown’, the distillery is known for the power and umami of its flavors.
The ‘Midnight Malt’ is described as having notes of “peppery spice, orchard fruits, and chocolate.”
Alongside the 30-year-old, Mortlach has partnered with designer, architect, and artist Suchi Reddy to release a dual-function whisky coaster and incense holder. The scent is designed to pair with the Midnight Malt.
Mortlach recently appointed Phillipe Starck as its first creative director.
