Pursuit Spirits, the Louisville-based whiskey brand founded by Kenny Coleman and Ryan Cecil of the Bourbon Pursuit podcast, has announced its latest release, Old Anvil. The third release in the Mellwood Legacy Collection, Old Anvil is a distillery-exclusive release inspired by a long-lost label once bottled by General Distillers in Louisville.
Back in 2019, Coleman and Cecil secured four barrels from a renowned Kentucky distillery and envisioned crafting a limited release. The duo soon realised after obtaining the five-year-old barrels that instead of rich complexity, the whiskey had undesirable notes of grass and hay. The barrels were put in the distillery’s rickhouse and left to age. More than a decade later, Coleman and Cecil tasted the whiskey again and found it to have a balance of rich oak and nutty flavors. The two felt it was perfect for a special release.
Pursuit Spirits say this release has notes of root bear float and honeysuckle on the nose, followed by orange-vanilla cola and Madagascar vanilla bean on the palate.
“Old Anvil is proof that time can change everything,” said Ryan Cecil, Pursuit Spirits master blender and CEO. “We once thought these barrels were a mistake, but years later, they became something truly remarkable. It’s a good thing we had a ton of distractions because I’m excited to see what this bourbon has become.”
Available exclusively at Pursuit Spirits’ new Whiskey Row location starting August 28, Old Anvil (119.4 proof) is available in 375ml bottles at $99.99 SRP. A limited number of cases will be sold each day but booking the Mellwood Past & Present experience guarantees the opportunity to purchase while supplies last.
