As the presenting sponsor of the Kentucky Derby, Woodford Reserve is back again with their 2020 bottling to honoring “the greatest two minutes in sports”.
This year’s bottle showcases artwork from Louisville-based artist and former Atlanta Braves baseball player Richard Sullivan, who created a watercolor image of thoroughbreds hurtling towards the finish line of the Kentucky Derby.
“There is a poetic beauty in this year’s bottle because Richard Sullivan, the human athlete, is celebrating the equine athlete,” said Woodford Reserve master distiller Chris Morris.
This year’s one-liter bottle is available at RRP of $49.99 and pre-sale is available on Reserve Bar now.
“My goal was to create a beautiful image of the Kentucky Derby that embodies the spirit of competition, dedication, and freedom that is required to be your best,” Richard said. “I wanted to capture this intense moment of competition that is shared between the human and equine athlete. A moment when everything is on the line, time stops, awareness is heightened, mind and body are one, and anything is possible.”
During his time at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Richard played baseball and was drafted by the Braves in the 11th round as a junior, going on to play six years of minor league baseball before returning to his degree in 2014. His work has gone on to be featured across the United States, including at Mercedes Benz Stadium and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Derby bottle has been an annual collector’s item anticipated by Bourbon and racing fans since 1999 and this 2020 edition will be a great new addition to any collection.
To celebrate the release of the 2020 bottle, a special Derby party will be held on Saturday, March 21, from 4-7pm at Stoneware & Company, 731 Brent Street in Louisville, KY. Included in the celebrations will be a Derby fashion show featuring hats and bow-ties, Bluegrass music and small bites from The Café. Lastly, the event will benefit the Backside Learning Centre, with the option to get an autographed bottle from the artist, Chris Morris, assistant master distiller Elizabeth McCall and several Derby-winning jockeys.
